Marco Bons: A Maestro of Global Renown
Marco Bons (1966) has crafted an impressive career as a conductor, with highlights that span the globe. In August 2015, he won the second prize at the prestigious Conducting Competition of the Atlantic Coast Festival in Portugal. This is just one of many achievements: in June 2009, he claimed first prize at the Blue Danube Opera Conducting Competition in Bulgaria. Since then, Marco has become a sought-after conductor in opera houses across Eastern Europe, including Romania, Slovakia, and Bulgaria.
His talent has not gone unnoticed. As a laureate of the International Conducting Competition in Hamm (Germany), he led the renowned Westfälisches Sinfonie Orchester. He has conducted the Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra in Hungary, and the Hungarian Opera of Cluj-Napoca in Romania.
Marco is a conductor with a profound passion for opera. He has worked on productions featuring timeless masterpieces by Purcell, Mozart, Ravel, and Verdi, as well as contemporary works by composers such as Ton de Leeuw and Udo Zimmermann. Both in the Netherlands and abroad, he has brought operatic classics to life, including Puccini’s La Bohème and Madama Butterfly and Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata.
In addition to his operatic endeavors, Marco leads various ensembles and orchestras. He is the principal conductor of the chamber orchestra “Utrechtse Muziekacademie” (UMA) and the symphony orchestra “Carpe Diem” in The Hague. He was also the artistic director of the Rotterdam-based chamber orchestra "Continuo" for many years. In 2008, he founded “Camerata Terra Reno,” a professional chamber orchestra that showcases his versatility, performing a repertoire that spans from Baroque to contemporary music.
Marco further honed his skills in masterclasses with legendary figures such as Sergiu Celibidache, Edo de Waart, and Peter Eötvös. He studied conducting at the Conservatory of Utrecht under the guidance of Kenneth Montgomery and David Porcelijn. Adding to his uniqueness is his background as a violinist, having studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory and performed with professional ensembles, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Marco Bons (1966) heeft een indrukwekkende reis afgelegd als dirigent, met hoogtepunten die de hele wereld omspannen. In augustus 2015 veroverde hij de tweede prijs bij de prestigieuze Conducting Competition van het Atlantic Coast Festival in Portugal. En dat is slechts een van zijn vele wapenfeiten: in juni 2009 won hij de eerste prijs op de Blue Danube Opera Conducting Competition in Bulgarije. Sindsdien is Marco een veelgevraagde dirigent in operahuizen in Oost-Europa, waaronder in Roemenië, Slowakije en Bulgarije.
Zijn talent is niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Als winnaar van de International Conducting Competition in Hamm (Duitsland) leidde hij het gerenommeerde Westfälisches Sinfonie Orchester. Tijdens zijn studies aan het Conservatorium van Utrecht werkte hij onder begeleiding van kenners zoals Kenneth Montgomery en David Porcelijn. Wat Marco extra bijzonder maakt, is zijn achtergrond als violist. Hij studeerde viool aan het Conservatorium van Rotterdam en speelde in professionele ensembles, waaronder het Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest.
